Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. DuVernay worked as a night nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she required during the day for the love of art, literature and theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers they spent there to help in her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for television journalism during her time as a college student. She started as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was recalled having the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the rubbish of one members of the juries. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism by the tasks that she was assigned, the journalist decided to pursue a career as a publicist. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio just after she had graduated from the college. She launched in 1999 her own private company for public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also established a range of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
